Welcome back to behind the jewels! This time we had the pleasure of sitting down with our sweet heart Sophie Huisman, founder of Dutch Jewellery brand Soof-Juliët, and newest member of the July Child fam. Sophie started Soof-Juliët out of a deep passion for designing and a love for all things that sparkle, so of course we had to pick her brain about her playful style, and potential future collabs!
Behind the Jewels always starts with the same question: What was your first ever significant piece of jewellery and how did you acquire it?
My very first significant piece of jewelry that I received is a bracelet inscribed with my name and birthdate. I received it for my 7th birthday from my grandfather, who has since passed away. When it no longer fit me, I had it resized larger and wear it every day.
How would you describe your personal style, and what inspires your fashion choices?
I would say playful and a bit different than average. I always try to combine one standout piece with more neutral ones, and I love shoes that are unique and eye-catching. Of course, I always adorn myself with plenty of jewellery, as it can never be missed and truly completes an outfit.
What inspired you to start your Jewellery brand?
Initially, I wanted to pursue a goldsmithing course. However, during the introductory session, they mentioned that with that education, you'd likely work mostly on commissions for clients rather than designing your own pieces. Disheartened by this revelation, I returned home, and it was my mother who suggested, "Why don't you create and sell your own jewelry?”. So, Soof-Juliët was born.
Where do you find inspiration?
I can find inspiration in everything, such as people on the street or specific colour combinations. I'm constantly looking at what I personally find appealing or would wear. From there, I start designing, and that's how my jewellery comes to life.
Whats your favourite Design thus far?
My favourite design is the charms from the latest collection. Especially the large flower charm adorned with zirconia stones—I'm in love with it. It's truly a striking and statement piece that complements any outfit. Great for pairing with an oversized sweater but also for wearing during a night out.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my friends, socialising over drinks and engaging in lively conversations together. Additionally, I find great pleasure in lounging on the couch and indulging in some downtime by watching a series. It all depends on my mood at the time.
What's in store for you and Soof-Juliët in 2024?
I'll be completing my studies this year, so I'm looking forward to being able to invest more time in Soof-Juliët, as it has sometimes been a challenge in recent years. I hope to release many more beautiful collections and perhaps designing a piece of jewelry together with July Child would be a fantastic goal...
